West Indies Elect to Bat First Against Uganda in T20 World Cup 2024 Clash at Providence Stadium

In a T20 World Cup 2024 match held at Providence Stadium, Guyana, on Sunday, the West Indies opted to bat first after winning the toss against Uganda.

The West Indies, entering their second game of the tournament, previously secured a victory over Papua New Guinea (PNG), although the win was less than convincing.

Conversely, Uganda suffered a heavy defeat by 125 runs to Afghanistan but bounced back with a spirited performance against PNG, earning their first-ever T20 World Cup win.

Both teams have maintained their previous lineups for this encounter.

“We are going to bat first. It looks like a typical Guyana wicket – low and slow. Hopefully, we can put some runs on the board and defend it. It’s still a wicket where you need to play good cricket shots. A total of 110-120 is not defendable. Once we improve in all three departments, we should be good. The last few days we did some training and resting,” said West Indies captain Rovman Powell at the toss.

Uganda’s captain, Brian Masaba, commented: “I probably would have batted first as well. It’s a bit difficult to chase. It’s what we have got, so we have to bowl well. The win against PNG was historic for us, but it’s back to business. We’re focusing on getting the boys to perform again. We’ll try to come out here and give our best, ensuring we get our processes right and put West Indies under pressure.

“It’s about reminding the guys of their past successes as a batting unit, keeping it nice and simple. Focus on the ball again. If we can do that, we can get a decent score.”

The teams for the match are as follows:

  • Uganda XI: Roger Mukasa, Simon Ssesazi (wk), Robinson Obuya, Riazat Ali Shah, Alpesh Ramjani, Dinesh Nakrani, Juma Miyagi, Kenneth Waiswa, Brian Masaba (c), Cosmas Kyewuta, Frank Nsubuga.
  • West Indies XI: Brandon King, Johnson Charles, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Roston Chase, Rovman Powell (c), Sherfane Rutherford, Andre Russell, Romario Shepherd, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie.
