The United Nations is pressing for an impartial investigation into the discovery of mass graves at two major hospitals in war-stricken Gaza following raids by Israeli forces. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stressed the importance of credible investigators gaining access to the sites. Dujarric also highlighted the necessity for increased safety for journalists in Gaza to accurately report on the situation.
For the United Nations to initiate an investigation, approval from one of its main bodies is required, Dujarric explained. He emphasized the need for an investigation characterized by accessibility and credibility, refraining from preemptively determining the outcomes.
Earlier, UN human rights chief Volker Turk expressed shock at the destruction of Gaza City’s Shifa medical center and Khan Younis’s Nasser Hospital. He called for transparent investigations into the deaths, advocating for the involvement of international investigators amid a climate of impunity.
