ECI Begins Preparations for Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Elections, Invites Symbol Applications from Unrecognised Parties

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has begun preparations for assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir, inviting applications from registered unrecognised parties for the allocation of common symbols.

Effective immediately, the ECI is accepting applications under Para 10B of the Election Symbols (Reservation & Allotment) Order, 1968, for common symbols in the general election to the Legislative Assembly of the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir.

This step by the ECI to invite applications from registered unrecognised parties for common symbols suggests that assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir are forthcoming. In December 2023, the Supreme Court directed the ECI to hold assembly elections in the Union Territory by September 30, 2024.
