Concerns Arise Over Supreme Court Verdict on Article 370: PDP Leader Warns of Potential Detriment to Country’s Interests

Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), expressed concern on Saturday about the actions of the Jammu and Kashmir administration, suggesting that they foreshadow a Supreme Court verdict on petitions related to Article 370 of the Constitution. Mufti raised apprehensions that such a decision might not align with the interests of the country.

“We have observed since Friday night that lists containing the names of workers from various parties, particularly the PDP, are being processed through police stations. It appears that an impending decision is unfavorable to the country and Jammu and Kashmir, serving the BJP’s agenda. Consequently, precautionary measures are being implemented, which is regrettable,” Mufti conveyed to reporters in Anantnag.

Emphasizing the crucial role of the apex court, Mufti asserted that it is incumbent upon the court to safeguard the integrity of the country and its Constitution, rather than advancing the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) agenda.

Mufti underscored that the Supreme Court’s decision should unequivocally declare the BJP-led Centre’s actions on August 5, 2019, to abrogate Article 370 as “illegal” and “unconstitutional.” She contended that such a move went against the interests of Jammu and Kashmir and contradicted the commitments made to its people.

“Critically, the Supreme Court took an extended period of five years to hear the cases, and its prior judgments have acknowledged that no one, aside from the constituent Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir, has the authority to abrogate Article 370,” Mufti added.
