Actress Sarah Paulson recently shared a jaw-dropping encounter she had while performing in the play “Talley’s Folly” during a chat on the Smartless podcast. Paulson, alongside hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, delved into the tradition of post-show visits from fellow celebrities when she recounted the incident.
Reflecting on her time in “Talley’s Folly,” Paulson didn’t hold back as she recounted an unexpected visit from another actress. “I did do a play once. The last time I was on stage, I did a play called Talley’s Folly at the Roundabout,” she began, before dropping the name: “The actress — and I’m going to say this, and I’m not going to ask you to cut this out, because I don’t f care — this actress came to the play. Her name is Trish Hawkins — Hi, Trish! Hi, Trisha!”
Paulson recounted the actress’s peculiar critique: “Trish Hawkins came to the play — am I going to get sued? I don’t care, because I think this is outrageous.” Apparently, Hawkins had a unique observation about Paulson’s attire: “Your dress is yellow. Mine was pink.” Paulson was understandably baffled by the comment.
Adding to the surreal encounter, Paulson shared, “Cut to two days later, I got an email that was six pages long of notes and a communication to me about what she had done when she had done the play, what she recommended I do.” The actress didn’t hold back in expressing her disbelief, labeling the incident as “outrageous.”
Notably, Paulson took on the role of Sally Talley in a 2013 revival of “Talley’s Folly,” a character originally portrayed by Hawkins during the play’s off-Broadway run in 1979 and subsequent Broadway debut in 1980.
Closing her account of the encounter, Paulson didn’t mince words: “Trish Hawkins, I have not forgotten it, and I hope to see you never.” It seems clear that Paulson was unimpressed by the unsolicited advice she received.
