Renowned Urdu Poet Munawwar Rana Passes Away at 71, Leaving Behind a Rich Literary Legacy

Iconic poet Munawwar Rana, known for his profound contributions to Urdu literature, has passed away at the age of 71 at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences. The renowned wordsmith had been battling throat cancer for an extended period.

Sumaiya Rana, Munawwar Rana’s daughter, informed PTI that her father breathed his last at the hospital on Sunday night and will be laid to rest on Monday. The poet is survived by his wife, four daughters, and a son.

Having endured a prolonged illness, Munawwar Rana was hospitalized for 14 to 15 days. Initially admitted to Medanta in Lucknow, he was later transferred to SGPGI, where he succumbed to his ailments around 11 pm on Sunday, as revealed by the poet’s son, Tabrez Rana, to PTI.

Munawwar Rana’s poignant poem ‘Maa,’ celebrated as one of his masterpieces, holds a distinct place in the realm of Urdu literature.
