Colorado Republican Representative Lauren Boebert was hospitalized this week due to severe swelling in her leg, which prompted concerns. Following medical examinations, doctors identified May-Thurner syndrome, her campaign revealed.
This relatively obscure condition occurs when the right iliac artery in the abdomen compresses the left iliac vein, impeding blood flow from the left leg to the heart, as per Cleveland Clinic. Such compression can lead to circulation disruption in the legs.
Manifesting as significant swelling in her upper left leg, Boebert recognized signs of trouble, prompting further investigation by medical professionals. Typically affecting the left leg, symptoms may include heaviness, pain, skin discoloration, swelling, or sores.
Despite the syndrome’s lesser-known status, it affects a considerable portion of the population, with an estimated 1 in 5 individuals experiencing vein compression, often undiagnosed until complications arise. Women aged between 20 and 50 are more susceptible, according to Cleveland Clinic.
Boebert, aged 37, underwent surgical intervention to remove the clot, alongside the placement of a stent to facilitate normal blood flow, her campaign disclosed. Following doctor-recommended rest, a full recovery is anticipated, with no significant long-term health concerns or impediments to her congressional duties.
Currently representing Colorado’s 3rd district, Boebert, known for her far-right stance, is concurrently vying for the 4th district seat across the state.
