Google App Crashing on Android: Search and Discover Features Down

On Saturday evening (PT), many Android users encountered issues with the Google app, which repeatedly crashes with the message “Google keeps stopping” when they try to search.

Attempting to open the Google app via the homescreen icon results in the app briefly loading before returning to the homescreen. The Google Search bar widget momentarily displays past queries before also crashing. The Pixel Launcher search bar still functions for device lookups, but entering a query causes the results page to load briefly before the app crashes.

Google Discover (located to the left of the homescreen) fails to launch, and tapping the Voice Search microphone also causes the Google app to stop working.

After multiple attempts to launch the app, Android displays a “Google keeps stopping” error message. This issue appears to affect the latest stable (15.35) and beta (15.36) versions, as well as older versions of the Google Search app on Android 15, 14, and potentially earlier versions. Google Assistant, Gemini, and Google Lens remain functional, and you can still use google.com through Chrome for Android as a workaround. The Gemini app is also an alternative.

No other platforms seem to be affected, indicating that this problem is specific to the Google app on Android. All other first-party services, such as YouTube, Drive, and Docs, continue to work normally as of Saturday evening/Sunday morning.

While this issue may draw comparisons to the WebView bug of 2021, it is important to note that only the Google app is impacted. The Google app plays a crucial role in many Android services, making this a significant disruption.
