Battling Bias: Balochistan Appoints Fifth Female Deputy Commissioner, Fareeda Tareen, Amidst Back-to-Back Transfers

Amidst a backdrop of women making significant strides across various sectors in Pakistan, the Balochistan government has granted approval for the appointment of another woman, Fareeda Tareen, as deputy commissioner (DC).

Fareeda, previously serving as assistant commissioner (AC) in Dasht tehsil of Balochistan’s Kharan district, has been promoted to the position of deputy commissioner in Sohbatpur district.

This move marks a significant achievement, as Fareeda becomes the fifth female deputy commissioner in the province, challenging the societal norms of male dominance and setting an example of efficient administrative leadership amidst a politically volatile environment and subdued insurgency.

Her appointment is part of a trend, as several other high-ranking female government officers, including Humaira Baloch in Lasbela, Sadaf Batool Assadi in Naseerabad, Rohana Gul Kakar in Hub, and Ayesha Zehri in Awaran, have taken charge of administrative roles in different parts of the province.

Fareeda’s career journey has been marked by challenges, notably experiencing four consecutive transfers within 36 days from February 11 to March 16, 2021, as reported by Geo News.

Initially appointed as Assistant Commissioner Quetta on February 11, her posting was revoked the following day. She was then assigned as Section Officer Three in the administration department on February 16, followed by a placement as Section Officer One in the Services and General Administration Department (S&GAD) on February 25. Finally, on March 16, she assumed the role of Section Officer in Commerce and Industries.

In response to inquiries regarding Fareeda Tareen’s transfers, Balochistan government spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani dismissed any allegations of discrimination against the female officer. Acknowledging Fareeda’s capabilities, Shahwani emphasized that transfers are routine aspects of the bureaucratic profession, highlighting Fareeda’s intelligence and diligence.
