Yemen Houthi Rebels Strike Commercial Tanker with Cruise Missile, Escalating Tensions in International Waters

A commercial tanker ship, the STRINDA, was struck by a land-based cruise missile launched from Houthi-controlled Yemen, causing a fire and damage, according to two U.S. defense officials who spoke with Reuters on Monday. The incident occurred approximately 60 nautical miles north of the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported. The U.S. Navy destroyer Mason was present at the scene, providing assistance.

Yemen’s movement has been actively targeting international shipping, particularly amid regional tensions related to the Israel-Hamas conflict. In a statement on Saturday, the movement declared their intention to target all ships bound for Israel, irrespective of their nationality, and issued warnings to international shipping companies against engaging with Israeli ports.
