Interim Syrian Government Unites Rebel Groups Under Ministry of Defense
The leader of the Syrian Interim Government, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, successfully persuaded opposition-affiliated rebel groups on Tuesday to disband their individual identities and integrate under the Ministry of Defense as part of the new Syrian army.
This significant development was announced in an official statement issued by the Syrian Interim Government.
Interim Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Bashir had previously declared that the Ministry of Defense would restructure opposition factions into a unified framework. The process includes reorganizing the ranks of rebel officers into a cohesive command structure.
Ahmed Al-Sharaa faced a challenging task in his role as the leader of the interim government. His priority was to avoid internal conflict and ensure unity by bringing the numerous factions under one banner.
One of the prominent figures in the new leadership, Abu Kasra, who played a key role in toppling Bashar Al-Assad’s regime, will serve as the Minister of Defense in the interim government.
Ahmed Al-Sharaa assured visiting Western officials that the group formerly known as “Tahrir Al-Sham” has no ties with Al-Qaeda and harbors no intention of revenge. He emphasized that no retributive actions would be taken against individuals associated with the previous regime or those from different religious sects.
Fighters under the command of Tahrir Al-Sham seized control of Damascus on December 8, successfully ending Bashar Al-Assad’s 13-year rule.
This move marks a critical step toward stabilizing Syria and building a unified military structure for the country’s future governance.
