Prince Alwaleed bin Khaled, Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” Passes Away After Nearly 20 Years in Coma
Prince Khaled bin Talal has confirmed the passing of his son, Prince Alwaleed bin Khaled bin Talal, after nearly two decades in a coma caused by a tragic traffic accident in London in 2005. He was widely known as “The Sleeping Prince.”
The funeral prayers will be held on Sunday at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh, following the Asr prayer, according to a statement published by Saudi Gazette.
Prince Alwaleed was a university student in the United Kingdom when the accident occurred. The severe injuries left him in a full coma, and despite multiple signs of minimal movement over the years, he never regained full consciousness.
For almost 20 years, Prince Alwaleed remained under intensive medical care. His father, Prince Khaled, consistently rejected suggestions to end life support, maintaining his firm belief in God’s will and expressing hope that his son might recover.
The young prince’s story drew widespread attention and sympathy across Saudi Arabia and the Muslim world. Social media users often prayed for his recovery, and updates on his condition were regularly followed by millions.
With the news of his passing on Saturday, tributes have poured in from across the Kingdom. Many Saudis have expressed grief while remembering the family’s faith and perseverance through this long and painful ordeal.
Prince Alwaleed’s death marks the end of a heartbreaking chapter in modern royal history—one that captured the emotions of a nation and embodied a father’s unwavering hope and love.
