Shehbaz Sharif Comments on Vandalism of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Statues Amidst Bangladesh Protests

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has commented on the recent demolition of statues of Bangladesh’s founder, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which occurred during student-led protests. Sharif described the actions as the outcome of the anti-Pakistan movement led by Rahman, implying that his fate was a result of his divisive role.

The unrest in Bangladesh escalated following the collapse of Sheikh Hasina’s government, which led to widespread violence and significant casualties. The protests, initially sparked by demands to abolish civil service job quotas, evolved into calls for Hasina’s resignation and resulted in severe riots, with nearly 300 people killed and thousands injured.

Sharif, speaking at the National Youth Convention in Islamabad, used the incident to highlight what he perceived as the consequences of divisive actions. He noted that Pakistan had endured substantial losses in its fight against terrorism and had made significant sacrifices. The prime minister praised Pakistan’s role in counterterrorism, stating that the entire world benefited from its efforts.

At the convention, which was attended by key figures including federal ministers, the Chief of Army Staff, and educational leaders, Sharif emphasised the importance of unity and progress. He praised the 1973 Constitution and the nation’s solidarity during the 1998 nuclear tests. Addressing economic challenges, he highlighted the government’s decision to privatise Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and compared Pakistan’s development efforts unfavourably with those of South Korea.

Sharif assured that despite current challenges, including electricity issues and economic constraints, the government remains committed to youth empowerment. He outlined past initiatives such as merit-based laptop distribution and scholarship programmes and emphasised the need for continued investment in education and skill development.

He urged the youth to engage in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and mentioned a Rs50 billion relief package for electricity consumers. Sharif called for a united effort from politicians and national institutions to ensure the country’s progress and prosperity, stressing that history would judge their actions.
