Our Inspirational Journey Towards Islam: A Story of Faith and Transformation
Growing up in New Zealand, our lives were rooted in a culture far from the path we would later embrace. We were two young women, ordinary in many ways, but with hearts seeking something deeper. This is our story — a journey of faith, courage, and transformation.
I have been known as Inaya for most of my life, but after embracing Islam, I adopted the name Zahra. My companion on this journey, a dear sister, was Evelyn, who later chose the name Afreen upon her conversion. Our paths to Islam were distinct, yet intertwined by destiny.
The Beginning of My Journey
For me, it all began four years ago. I had been searching for a purpose, a sense of fulfilment that nothing in my life seemed to provide. A childhood friend, Wafiqa, who had been Muslim since birth, played a pivotal role in my journey. She invited me to her home, not just to share moments of friendship but to introduce me to the beauty of Islam.
During my visits, I listened to Islamic lectures, explored the Qur’an, and observed the simplicity and peace within her family. It was her Qur’an recitation that truly touched my heart. It was as though the words reached into my soul and awakened something I didn’t know was there. Without informing my parents, I embraced Islam in 2020 with the guidance and support of Wafiqa and her family.
When I finally shared my decision with my parents, it was met with rejection and anger. They could not accept my choice, and the situation escalated to the point where they asked me to leave our home. Alone and heartbroken, I sought refuge with Wafiqa and her family, who became my pillar of strength. Two years later, tragedy struck when my parents passed away in a car accident. I mourned not only their loss but also the fact that they had not embraced the truth I had found.
Afreen’s Path to Islam
Afreen’s journey was different yet equally profound. She was introduced to Islam through me, as we grew closer over time. In 2023, we had a deep and heartfelt conversation about faith. I shared my experiences and the solace I found in Islam. Her curiosity grew, and she began to explore the religion quietly.
In September 2024, after months of contemplation and understanding, Afreen embraced Islam. This decision came with its own challenges, as her parents disapproved and asked her to leave their home. Despite the hardships, Afreen remained steadfast in her faith, and together we supported one another as sisters in Islam.
Our Bond and Faith
Our journeys, though distinct, brought us together in a bond of sisterhood and faith. We leaned on each other through trials and celebrated the beauty of Islam together. Both of us were deeply influenced by the Holy Qur’an, which became our guide and companion in life. For me, it was the power of its verses that first moved my heart. For Afreen, it was the understanding she gained through our conversations and her own reflection.
Lessons from Our Journey
Our stories are a testament to the transformative power of Islam. It provided us with clarity, purpose, and a connection to something greater than ourselves. Yet, our journey was not without pain. We faced rejection from those closest to us, endured loneliness, and had to rebuild our lives from scratch. Despite this, we found peace and strength in our faith.
We owe so much to Wafiqa, whose unwavering support and guidance introduced me to Islam. Her kindness and her family’s openness showed me what it meant to live as a Muslim. To this day, we remember her in our prayers and remain grateful for the role she played in shaping our paths.
A Message to Others
Our journey is a reminder that faith often requires courage and sacrifice. Embracing Islam brought challenges but also immeasurable blessings. We hope that our story inspires others who may be on their own path of exploration. Trust in Allah, seek knowledge, and surround yourself with those who uplift you in faith.
We ask for your prayers, not just for us, but for all those who are seeking the truth and those who supported us along the way. May Allah guide and protect us all.
Salutations,
Zahra and Afreen
