Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir Ready for Electoral Comeback if Ban is Revoked

In a significant development, the banned Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir (JeI) has announced its readiness to contest the upcoming Assembly elections if the central government lifts the ban imposed on the organization¹. Ghulam Qadir Wani, the head of JeI’s panel, expressed their commitment to democratic governance and the power of people’s mandate. JeI, known for its influence in the socio-political and religious spheres of Kashmir, was banned in 2019 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for allegedly supporting militant activities. Now, JeI aims to focus on socio-religious reforms, combating drug abuse, and addressing immorality as part of its electoral agenda.

JeI’s history in electoral politics dates back to 1972 when it first entered assembly elections. Although it won only five seats, it actively participated until 1987. After allegations of rigging in 1987 and the eruption of militancy in 1989, JeI refrained from electoral processes. If the ban is lifted, this would mark the first time since 1987 that Jamaat will participate in elections.

Please note that JeI has been associated with pro-Pakistan sentiments and separatist causes in the Valley, while the government accuses it of promoting terrorism and anti-India propaganda.
