6 Israeli Soldiers Commit Suicide, Mental Health Crisis Deepens Among Israeli Soldiers Amid Gaza and Lebanon Wars

At least six Israeli soldiers have died by suicide in recent months, citing severe psychological distress caused by the wars in Gaza and southern Lebanon, according to Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth. The actual number may be higher, as official military figures remain undisclosed despite earlier promises to release them by year-end.

The report sheds light on a growing mental health crisis within the Israeli army, with thousands of soldiers seeking support from military mental health services. Around one-third of those affected are reported to exhibit symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Experts warn that the true scale of the crisis may emerge only after active operations conclude and soldiers attempt to return to civilian life.

Alarming Figures and Expert Warnings

In March, Lucian Tatsa-Laur, head of the Israeli military’s mental health department, revealed that approximately 1,700 soldiers had already received psychological treatment. Reports suggest many more are now struggling with trauma due to extended deployments in conflict zones. The investigation notes that psychological injuries among troops may outnumber physical ones sustained during the war.

Regional Tensions and Growing Global Condemnation

The ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza, which has reportedly claimed over 44,000 lives—mostly women and children—has intensified regional and international backlash. Critics, including prominent figures and institutions, have labelled the blockade of aid and mass killings as acts of genocide.

Israel currently faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its actions in Gaza. In a groundbreaking decision, the International Criminal Court (ICC) recently issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes in Palestinian territories, including Gaza.

This escalating crisis underscores the heavy toll of prolonged conflict, not just on the civilian population but also on the soldiers sent to enforce these operations.
