PM Modi, Putin Hold Talks After Trump–Putin Alaska Summit; India Reaffirms Call for Peace in Ukraine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, just days after the latter’s high-profile meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska.

During the call, President Putin briefed Prime Minister Modi about the details of his discussions with Trump, which focused heavily on the ongoing Ukraine conflict and global security issues. The timing of the call was seen as significant, coming only hours before President Trump’s scheduled meeting in Washington with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders.

According to official sources, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s consistent position on the Ukraine war, stressing that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path to lasting peace. “India has always advocated for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts aimed at de-escalation,” he conveyed to Putin.

Both leaders also reviewed the status of India–Russia relations, including cooperation in energy, trade, defence, and connectivity projects. They agreed to maintain close consultations on regional and global issues of common interest.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Modi said he “valued the exchange of insights” with President Putin and reaffirmed India’s readiness to continue engaging with all stakeholders to contribute toward global stability.

The latest interaction reflects India’s balancing act of maintaining its traditional ties with Russia while engaging actively with the U.S. and Europe. As geopolitical tensions deepen, New Delhi continues to position itself as a voice for peace, dialogue, and multipolar engagement.
